rockabilly wedding

I am so psyched to bring you this week's vibrant and geeky themed rockabilly wedding!  This wedding encompasses everything I'm obsessed with:  tattoos, retro hairstyles, the color aqua, and bright red lipstick!  Courtney and Chris are the very definition of cool, even if they think their love of comics is on the nerdy side.  Oh and did I mention this is a destination wedding?  Yep, this couple brought their rockabilly style all the way to the Mexican Riviera, resulting in an eclectic mix of island and retro styles sprinkled with a hint of geek culture.  Also, this wedding story is told from the viewpoint of the groom!  Special thanks to Sweet Fire Photography for the beautiful submission.  Enjoy!

How They Met

"Courtney and I met through an online dating website.  My father had passed away on October 10th, 2008 due to cancer and I logged into my dating account to deactivate it, since I wasn’t interested in dating during such a difficult time.  As I was closing my account, Courtney’s profile picture came up on the cycled list of people that matched my profile.  I clicked it and was instantly drawn to her!  Our first date was November 10th, 2008 and in June the next year we bought our first house together.  We married four years later."

The Dress

"We decided on a beach wedding and it was very important for Courtney to be comfortable and able to move around easily.  Being weighed down in a heavy dress with a train did not sound appealing, especially in the 30 degree Celsius weather!  We found a seamstress on Etsy to make the dress; an ivory custom tea length with Tiffany blue trim.  Our goal was functional, simple, and retro."

"I ordered a pair of custom Chuck Taylor shoes in Tiffany blue with our wedding date stitched on them.  My groomsmen each wore their very own Chuck Taylors that were super hero themed.  All of us enjoy comics!"

The Ceremony

"For our geeky themed rockabilly wedding ceremony, we used a light satin fabric as a canopy to frame the aisle and tie in our small beach ceremony.  We also purchased a custom wood wedding sign with our names and date of the wedding, painted with our wedding colours."

"The music we chose was also non-traditional.  The initial ceremony music was 'Chapel of Love' by the Dixie Cups (1964) and the walk down the aisle was from the Wall-E Soundtrack, 'Define Dancing' by Thomas Newman (2008).  We also wrote our own vows, which added a nice personal touch to the ceremony and had custom painted parasols for both the bride and flower girl with matching bamboo fans for our guests."

The Geeky Themed Rockabilly Wedding Reception

"Many of our personal touches came to light at the reception.  We kept our colours consistent with Tiffany blue and ivory for the table cloths, runners, and napkins. We also had a large number of paper lanterns that hung from the center of the reception hall.  Rather than have them strung one at a time, we had multiples in various sizes on one string to give it a 'beaded' effect."

"Our centerpieces were not fancy, just simple glass vases with beach sand and white starfish.  We used ivory cardboard and a starfish hole punch from Michael's craft store to create custom name cards for each guest."

"For our guestbook and table numbers, we decided to play into the ocean theme.  The guest book was a large print of ocean animal silhouettes.  Guests then picked the animal of their choice (dolphins, sharks, starfish, whales, etc.) and signed them to be assembled on our print.  This made a nice keepsake and framed piece of artwork to proudly display. The table numbers were named after sea animals (eg. seahorse table) that included a natural history drawing framed picture.  The ink was similar to our colours and we used a white frame to make it look classy!"

island wedding cake cutting

"Our geeky themed rockabilly wedding cake topper was custom made for us by an Etsy company in NY.  We chose the design and added our beloved dog, which turned out amazing!  We now keep the cake topper on our mantel as a keepsake.  The music throughout the evening was everything from 50’s doo wop to 80’s punk rock.  We chose songs that reminded of us of one another!  Our first dance was to 'As the World Falls Down' by David Bowie (1986) from the Labyrinth soundtrack, our garter toss was set to 'Chick Habit' by April March (1995) and the bouquet toss was to 'Lollipop' by the Chordettes (1958)."

Favorite Moment

"There were so many special moments, but I think after the ceremony when we drove down to the neighbouring fishing village to take pictures, was the best.  As we walked with our photographer Lori and her assistant Tanya, scores of locals congratulated us and admired our wedding attire (my custom Chuck Taylors were definitely a hit). We felt like celebrities with all the attention on us and complete strangers showed us so much kindness!  After finishing our photos, we arrived back to the car to find that people had drawn hearts on the windows."
